I tried to check my credit report online through annualcreditreport.com. They told me they were unable to verify that I was who I said I was. And that I had a morgage in 2005. I have never had a morgage. How do I go about researching this without costing a fortune?

You can check the following website:
If you see any activities that were not made by you, call the number they have and they will investigate and help you out. More importantly, they will set a red flag on your credit for the next couple of months. This will prevent you to apply for credit cards or mortgage request. However, it does help a lot. I speak from my personal experience as i was a victim of identity theft.
Also if you want to be extra cautious or want to use another resource, try checking with your bank. Most of the banks offer excellent package for identity theft protection.
Hope this helps.

I would recommend in signing up for credit monitoring. Go to myfico.com and sign up for either score watch with equifax, or identity guard with transunion. It alerts you within 24hrs if any changes were made to your file. As well, attached is I believe 25,000 insurance.

Call Trans Union toll free # 877-322-8228 and request all 3 credit report. If you feel there is fraud involved, Then request to be put on Fraud Alert. Better safe than sorry later.
